Mary Alice Melvin was born in Statesboro, Georgia to the late Sherman Melvin, Sr. and Ellen Jones Melvin on May 6, 1941 in Bulloch County. She was a graduate of William James High School in Statesboro, Georgia. Mary moved to Long Island, New York and attended Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York. Mary worked as a Customer Sales and Service Representative for 38 years in the Jewelry Department at Fortunoff Department Store in New York.
Having been introduced to the Lord at an early age at Hutchinson Longstreet and Friendship Baptist Churches, Mary continued her walk with the Lord at Antioch Baptist Church in Hempstead, New York. On November 7, 2020, while a patient at Good Shepherd Hospice (Mercy Hospital), she left this earthly life and transitioned to her heavenly home.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by siblings Pauline Melvin, Emma Jean Armstrong, Samuel Jones, Freddie Melvin and Andrew (AJ) Melvin.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Sharon Melvin, Statesboro, Georgia; Cheryl Smith (H.B.), Adkins, Texas; Sheila Gardner (Terry), South Carolina; sister-Esther Melvin, San Antonio, Texas; brothers- Sherman and Frankie Melvin of Statesboro, Georgia; Ronnie Melvin, Augusta, Georgia and Tommy Melvin (Faye) of Claxton, Georgia; sisters-in-law: Juanita Melvin, Atlanta, Georgia and Betty Jones, Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and special friends.
A private memorial service will be held for the family only at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Friendship Baptist Church on Mud Road in Stilson, Georgia.
