James Stephen Garbett, affectionately known as Jim, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 14, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy defined by service, family, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Born December 21, 1945, in Statesboro, Georgia, Jim devoted much of his life to serving his country and his community. His military career spanned more than two decades and included service in both the United States Army and Air Force.

He began his military career in the Army, where he served for more than 11 years before attending the University of Florida and earning his Juris Doctor degree. He later returned to active military service in the United States Air Force, serving as a Judge Advocate (JAG) and ultimately attaining the rank of Major. His Air Force service included overseas service during the Vietnam era and was recognized with numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and other distinguished awards.

But for Jim, service did not end with his military career.

As an attorney, he continued to use his knowledge and voice to advocate for others because he understood what it meant to navigate a world where not everyone was given an equal voice. He was also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, where his fraternity brothers became another part of the community he cherished.

Jim was brilliant, witty, and deeply generous. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh, make people think, and make people feel that they mattered. He checked in on loved ones daily and was a phenomenal role model.

Jim's greatest legacy, however, was not found in his military decorations, his legal career, or his many accomplishments. It was found in the people he poured into, the people he encouraged, the people he advocated for, and the family he loved so fiercely.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shownun "Lisa" Garbett; his daughter, Shekebia Garbett; his parents, Stephen Garbett and Majestic Mitchell; and his sisters, Mildred G. Littles, Havanna Boston, Alice Allen, Helen Mincey, and Catherine Singleton.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory; his son, James Stephen Garbett, Jr .; his daughter-in-law, Allison Garbett; his grandchildren, Anita Garbett, Elmon Walters, Jr., and Parker Garbett; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones whose lives were made better by knowing him.

He would always say, "Don't try. Just do."

And like he did, we will do this ... together.

Celebration of Life was held on Friday, September 25, 2026 at 100:00am at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, Fl. 33513
